Mesopelagic Lore
All members of Mesopelagic love to make original characters and come up with interesting stories for them. So we all banded together and thought "what if we had lore for Mesopelagic as a whole?"
And that's what we did.
This lore isn't limited to only members of the team, as some of our non-team friends have lore connecting to us as well.
Backstories
NamNam
Nam has always been a quiet child of nature, always afraid someone would point out her flaws. Eventually as time went by she realized she was being followed, as paranoid as she was she felt it would be better to have a group around her.
So she found the members of her current team Mesopelagic. She was very picky about who she wanted to be in the group as she wanted to scare her stalker away as quickly as possible.
Basalt
Basalt had a relatively normal life growing up, although he wanted to enroll in inksports as soon as he was older enough.
However, he had a desire to be the strongest. Instead of official inksports, he found himself roped into illegal, underground fighting rings where he played with modified weapons. It was a dream come true for him, providing him a thrill he always wanted.
Train
Train was a former member of the Octarian army, specifically working under the engineer division. However... they weren't very good at it.
After arriving on the surface, Train somehow found themself entangled with the mafia. They kept saying that they were "part of The Family now", and Train simply thought that's what people meant by found family.

First Meetings
As her stalker got worse, NamNam realized that she needed a group of people to assist her. What better protection than a competitive Splatoon team?
Nam met Basalt while she was having a paranoia episode. She was constantly looking over her shoulder, and realized she was being followed. While looking for somewhere to hide or for someone to help her, she eventually saw a blue-haired octoling walking out of the alleyways, she quickly walked over and started spewing some nonsense about how she was being followed and really needed help. Her eyes were tearing up while she tried to explain, and the octoling seemed annoyed. But he agreed to help only if she paid him $10 to do so. She agreed, and Basalt dealt with the stalker the best way he knew how: dragging them into an alleyway and beating them up.
After the stalker left, NamNam was very grateful to Basalt, but he warned her that the stalker probably wouldn't stop. So instead, Basalt offered that if NamNam got him lunch at WideBurger every week he would stick around to make sure the stalker stayed away.
MISSING. How does NamNam meet each of them individually?
Eventually, they all agree to help NamNam even if they won't be getting paid all that much. They form their team and name themselves Mesopelagic, theming themselves after their favorite sharks.
The Inkblot Art Academy Incident
About a year after becoming a team, Mesopelagic enters a tournament. They had been arranging scrims for the past few weeks in preparation, and were pretty confident. In round (???), they faced off against a team called Flow-Tide, who ran a very interesting comp. During a match on Inkblot Tower Control, the enemy painbrush player had used his missiles against the members of Mesopelagic one too many times, especially against NamNam.
Unfortunately for him, and almost everyone else, this enraged Basalt. Finding an isolated part of Inkblot where no one would see, Basalt lured the opposing painbrush player there. Throwing down his wiper, Basalt lunged forward and attacked him with his bare hands.
Of course, eventually inkfish noticed that Basalt and the painbrush player were missing. Basalt came out of the altercation covered in ink and other gore, but he denied the accusations against him. Train believed him right away, despite the fact the painbrush player looked like he was on his last legs. NamNam was horrified, as were the other spectators. The match was quickly ended upon discovering the beatn body of the painbrush player, who was injured so badly they couldn't enter swim form anymore.
It was no shock to anybody that Basalt was, in fact, guilty, and they were to be suspended for the rest of the season. Unfortunately, during the investigation, Basalt's history of partaking in illegal activities was discovered, and he faced jail time instead of a simple suspension.
So for now, Mesopelagic was down to only 3 members.
Introducing: Jobb
Before the IAAI took place, Mesopelagic would frequent a burger joint called WideBurger after their matches. The owner Jobb was a retired competitive player, and a former assassin-for-hire who worked a lot in the underground. Eventually, their dangerous work caught up to them and they failed to take out a high-profile target and had to go into hiding.
MISSING. How does Jobb Splatoon feel about Meso frequenting WideBurger?
Jobb had watched the entire altercation go down at Inkblot Art Academy, and part of them saw something great in Basalt, if only they could be less... bloodthirsty. Jobb knew they needed a great lawyer and remembered one of their old coworkers Fruit was pursuing a law degree. It turned out that Fruit knew Basalt and the two were close friends, so they joined forces to help Basalt get out of prison. Basalt was taken to a holding cell while awaiting his trial, where Jobb managed to slip in and talk to Basalt, offering their coaching skills for Mesopelagic while also helping Fruit to reduce his sentence. Basalt took the bait.
